Notion vs. Obsidian for solo founders running AI agents
The question is not "which note app is better". It is: when an AI agent finishes a task at 2 a.m., where should the output live so that tomorrow's you — and tomorrow's agent — can find it? That is the real Notion vs. Obsidian split for a solo founder.
Where each one stands in 2026
Notion is the all-in-one workspace — docs, databases, project tracking, sites —
cloud-first. Pricing: Free at $0 per member/month; Plus $10 per member/month; Business $20 per
member/month (with Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and SAML SSO); Enterprise by quote. Custom agents
are billed in Notion credits ($10 per 1,000 monthly credits); there is a public API, webhooks, and
a Workers Beta to extend it with your own code and sync external data.
Obsidian is local Markdown files — no account, no mandatory cloud. It is free for every
use, including work (the commercial license became optional, $50/user/year, for organizations that
want to support development). Add-ons: Sync at $4/user/month (end-to-end encrypted, billed
annually) and Publish at $8/site/month. The ecosystem is community plugins; there is no first-party
AI.
For someone running agents, side by side
- Where the agent writesObsidian is a folder of .md files: any agent, CLI or script
reads and writes directly — no API, no token, no rate limit. Notion is an API call (tokens, limits,
and credits whenever the feature uses AI); the agent needs integration code.
- Built-in AINotion Business ships Notion Agent with credit metering — the capability
is ready, but billed by use. Obsidian has no first-party AI: you pick the plugin, the model and the
budget. Con: setup work. Pro: full control over what leaves your machine.
- Cost at one-person scaleObsidian: $0 core (optional Sync $4/mo; Publish $8/mo).
Notion: $0 solo too — but the features that make it "agent-ready" (Agent, Meeting Notes) live in
Business at $20/mo, plus credits per use.
- Showing it to a clientNotion publishes pages and sites with permissions and
domains — the workspace doubles as a storefront. Obsidian Publish is $8/mo per site and static. If
you sell services and the client needs to SEE progress, Notion has the door ready.
- Data riskNotion is a cloud dependency (the pricing page discusses data retention
and "zero data retention" at Enterprise). Obsidian is a file on your disk: git-able, grep-able, and
it survives any vendor dying.
- StructureNotion databases have properties, relations, automations and charts. In
Obsidian the structure lives in frontmatter and links, with community plugins for table views —
powerful, but you are the one who assembles it.
The 2 a.m. test, concretely
Three scenarios every solo founder knows, and how each tool answers:
- The agent finished a research reportIn Obsidian it saves
research/2026-10-competitors.md and the file is already in your folder — tomorrow you
open it on your phone via Sync, or read it with grep. In Notion, someone had to have written the
API integration — or the agent delivered in a chat and someone pasted it into a page.
- You want to turn this week's notes into a client pageIn Notion it is sharing the
page with permissions or publishing as a site — two clicks. In Obsidian it is exporting and hosting
somewhere, or subscribing to Publish.
- The vendor changes the plan or the priceNotion: you evaluate whether to stay.
Obsidian: the files are yours, in a format every tool on earth reads — the question "what if I
leave?" does not exist.
Who is this for
- Choose Notion ifyour workspace needs to be seen by clients or freelancers, you
live in structured databases (CRM, pipeline, sprints) and you want hosted AI agents without
maintaining infrastructure.
- Choose Obsidian ifyou want the agent to write files directly (no API integration),
you value plain text that outlives any tool, and you want to pay $0 while you test ten ideas.
- Many founders run bothObsidian as the brain the agent writes into; Notion as the
storefront the client sees. The cost of that setup is keeping the sync honest — and knowing which
of the two is the source of truth.
The short version
For agents, Obsidian wins on friction (the agent just writes a file) and durability (plain text
on your disk); Notion wins on storefront (clients see it, permissions, sites) and on ready AI
(Agent in Business). Official pages:

Where I come in
The note tool does not make an agent deliver — what does is a verification gate: the agent
finishes, the gate runs real commands and only lets the work through with evidence attached. That
is what this store sells: the complete pack of agent-delivery
skills.
